Hi there, I recently hoovered out my car(something I rarely do) and to my horror discovered the drivers footwell carpet was soaking wet! The rear passenger footwell is also wet but this is where the water has flowed back.I have tried a few experiments to see where it may be getting in but with no success.Does anyone have the answer? Is this a common problem or am I just uinlucky? My car is a 06(55) cooper s. I would appreciate any assistance with this. Thanks

Hi,

I'm sure there was someone else on here that had a similar problem, quite a while ago now, as far as I can remember it wsn't anything too serious.

Maybe someone else will also remember and come up with the answer.

Hi Beast, This is quite a common problem if the car has had spot lights fitted at some point, even if they have been removed the wiring may still be there, the wiring passes through the bulkhead and can either be fitted through an existing grommet alongside other wires or sometimes depending who fitted it can have a hole cut in a blanking grommet. either way can be a cause of leaks! have you had any work done on the car recently?

Dry the carpet out as much as possible or pull it away from the bulkhead and sprinkle talcum powder every where, it will turn to a mushy goo when it gets wet so will show where the leak is.

Thanks guys, and appologise to the Beast for almost pinching your name but my car came with the name Beast when I bought it and am a bit superstitous about changing names.
Anyway back to the leak, I think the only way I'll get to the bottom of this is to remove the soggy carpet and drive it about carpetless for a while until I see where the bloody water is comming from. A pain but not the end of the world, still a great unique car and the only one I have seen in pure Alpine white.

Hello and welcome to ECMC!

Hi there and Welcome.png stunning looking car. Wqas i resprayed Alpine white or is it a vinyl wrap ?? either weay its a belter.

Have you had your windscreen replaced recently, as sometimes they can leak if not fitted properly, or have you used jet wash with the engine running and the heater a/c on at all ?

All guesses, but if you take the carpets out and dry it all then try using a hose / jet wash and the talc to see if it shows where the waer ingress is coming from .

Thanks for the suggestion my friend,I think that I will have to remove the carpet like you said and try to see where the waters getting in.As far as I know the windscreen is the original. I'm not looking forward to taking the carpet up though it looks like a big job and I'm not a petrol head in any way.Just love the Mini.

I'm planning to take the carpet out on Tuesday hopefully before I drown! Can anyone tell me if the seats are easy to remove?I have been advised to disconnect the battery before removal as the air bag warning light may come on if I don't.Is this true? Is it just a simple case of undoing the 4 bolts that fix to the floor after that? Would really appreciate some advise as I'm a telephone engineer not mechanic. Thanks
JohnnieP
the front seats are easy peasy to remove.

before you start leave your ignition key in your pocket and no where near your ignition.
cos as long as you don't turn the key in ignition you don't need to disconnect battery or reset airbag light.

here's my instruction for front seat removal.
(only use this as a guide as I will not be held reponsible for any cockups)

1. recline seats forward and drop headrests down if in up position.
2. slide seat fully back and undo the 2 front floor bolts
3. then slide seat forward and undo the 2 rear floor seat bolts.

DON'T lift seat out of car yet

at this point double check your ignition keys are in your pocket and not the ignition

4. now you need to lean the seat over and un-plug the airbag
i think the socket is on the inner under edge of seat.

5. now you can lift seats out of car, this should be easier as you reclined them forward as described in step 1.

now repeat steps for other seat

To refit seats, follow steps in reverse order.

I hope this all helps towards fixing your problem smirk.gif

Hi Folks just to say that I'm no nearer finding the leak than I was when I started. I managed to remove the seats ok but actually removing the carpet is going to be a nightmare! These cars are made to be put together and not taken apart.I cant see how the carpet fits around the pedals or how to remove the centre console,so after a few phonecalls I have managed to find a guy in Hockley who will remove it thenn refit my new one for£200. When the old ones out I still have to find out where the watwers coming in from but I'll cross that bridge when it happens. I'll keep you posted on my progress(however slow it is)If there are any readers out there who has taken on the challenge of removing the carpet before and want to earn a few quid then lket me know. ThanksClick to view attachment

Good luck, hope you get sorted soon cool3.gif

Just to keep you informed of my slow progress.....well I have found a place close to me that restores and builds very expensive classic cars so I approached them and asked if they would take a look at Beast for me. They seem pretty confident that the water is getting in from the rear passenger windon. To take the carpet out repair the leak(wherever it is) and put a replacement carpet back in they quoted £150! Fantastic no more having to wear wellies to drive in. I'll keep you posted on the job.
